Keauhou Canoe Club Official Statement
Aloha Keauhou Canoe Club ʻohana,
Keauhou Canoe Club has always been and remains deeply committed to respecting and perpetuating Hawaiian culture. We understand that recent leadership changes have raised questions, and we want to provide clarity and reaffirm our commitment to supporting cultural traditions.
The club recently underwent standard election and governance updates. As part of these changes, we introduced co-chairs for our committees to improve transparency, encourage shared leadership, and provide mentorship for future generations. These updates reflect our commitment to pono management practices and were not intended to exclude anyone or diminish the role of Hawaiian culture within our club.
We want to be clear: no one was removed from a cultural leadership position. Those who stepped down made personal decisions to do so after our standard committee restructuring.
Our cultural programs remain a cornerstone of KCC. Hawaiian cultural education, including our valued keiki programs, continues to be fundamental to our identity and mission, and we are actively working to ensure these programs thrive—just as they have for the past 30 years.
We also understand that concerns have been raised about a recent event where individuals performed in hula-inspired attire. We regret any unintended offense and appreciate those who have shared their perspective. Hula is a deeply significant tradition, and we remain committed to ensuring that all cultural expressions within our club are approached with understanding and respect.
As we move forward, KCC remains dedicated to cultural respect, inclusion, and shared stewardship. We welcome and value the participation of all members who share our commitment to Hawaiian cultural traditions and paddling excellence.
Mahalo for your kōkua and for being part of our paddling ʻohana.
